Baby showers are a wonderful way to celebrate a new mom and the brand-new baby who is about to join her family. So often though because of distance and timing important friends and family members can't make it to the baby shower.
Therefore in lieu of an in-person baby shower my endlessly clever sister and dear friends decided to organize a "baby shower by mail." I have so enjoyed being on the receiving end of this lovely idea and unconventional alternative to the traditional baby shower.
My sister worked with Alix Sorrell, a talented illustrator and designer to create the invite. The design was inspired by this pretty little folded baby shower invite from the Oh Happy Day blog. Alix used the Pinterest board I created for the baby's nursery as inspiration for the design - I loved the giant whale! The card asked "guests" to send creative contributions in the form of a poem, lullaby, or short stories to Joe & I so that they can be bound into a book and we can read them to our daughter. The envelope included a response card and a pre-addressed envelope to make it super-easy for our friends and family to reply. In another few months my sister is going to create a book with all of the responses.
Since the baby shower by mail was sent out we've received several responses every week and I look forward to the blue envelopes showing up in the mail. We've received such a diverse range of poems, drawings, prayers, lullabies, and even stories about Joe & I growing up put into verse. Reading these little bits of love from family and friends around the country before and after the baby arrived has been such a heart-warming experience and made these early months with our brand-new little one even more special.
I have zero regrets about not having a fancy in-person shower (although they are wonderful, too) and I think a baby shower by mail is such a fun and thoughtful idea especially if the expectant mom you know has family and friends scattered around the country.
I've never heard of this idea? Isn't is lovely? Would you consider doing something like this for a friend or family member?
Thank you to my sister and my dear friends for making this happen and also to Alix for such a fun design! I can't wait until Willa is old enough to look through the book with us.
